4. "Aids Raids - Chiangrai"

I had a friend who owned a Restaurant in rai (Chiangrai) at the time.

He told me about the aids raids which ‘destroyed’ rai as a whoring destination.

It happened in the late 80’s when the thai government authorities panicked re Aids. The rai Governor must have been responsible for the decimation of what was once a whorists heaven on earth.

By the time the debt had been paid off the girl was a regular prostitute with nowhere to go . Sad , but true.

Along came Aids and panic. Many a whore house was closed down, possibly 90%. Hopefully, the girls gained their freedom, but I doubt it. Most likely they would have been shuttled off like cattle to another town out of the reach of the rai Governor.

My friend at the time , and rai Restauranter , told me that the Burmese girls were all rounded up and placed in Army trucks, handed over to the Burmese Army at the border, taken out to the forests and shot (killing fields).

The Burmese were fearful they were HIV positive and didn’t want them back in their country alive.
