A person I met whilst overseas , named Danny, told me of how he narrowly missed spending many years in a Filipino prison. Here’s a story that other readers can learn from.

This is how it happened.

On the flight to the Philippines Danny drank more than his share of grog, mixing drinks, rum and cokes and beer as was his practice.

By the time he arrived at Ermita in Manila he was pretty well sloshed, but having a great capacity for alchohol, and being the record holder at a 24 hour bar in Cebu for 72 hours non stop drinking without leaving the bar, except for going to the toilet , he just kept drinking.

On this occasion Danny wasnt thinking of setting any records , but he was still able to continue drinking in Ermita until to the wee hours of the next morning after his long trip from England.

He drank and smoked his life away at an open air beer joint in M.H. Pilar, too drunk to go looking for a woman for the night, even though he claims he screws best when drunk.

This beer joint Danny was stuck in , had access to the footpath and outside of this beer joint , there was a pretty young cigarette vendor on standby for Danny , whenever he wanted another cigarette.

Like Filipino’s , Danny bought one cigarette at a time, most probably in an effort to cut down on smokes. He tipped the young smiling girl every time. She looked legal, ie 18 years old, but Danny wasn’t absolutely sure, so he decided to have this first night by himself and kept drinking until he’d had enough.

On leaving , Danny gave the girl what was a big tip at the time , P50 , hailed a taxi , and when he opened the taxi door and stepped in, the girl stepped in too. She was looking for more than P50.

Danny was in no condition to resist and so took off with the girl.

Back at his el cheepo ‘Pensione’ (guest house type of accommodation) and in his room the young girl stripped in record time, laying nude on the bed with a big grin from ear to ear. Strange behaviour indeed , but Danny was too drunk to smell a rat. Danny wobbled around the room and struggled to get his T.Shirt off.

Whilst doing this , there were loud thumps on the door.

He opened to find - four policemen who quickly bundled him off to the local police station.

At the Police Station they explained to Danny that they were charging Dennis with having sex with a minor, as the girl was three months short of eighteen years of age , eighteen being the age of consent in the Philippines.

Danny’s protestations that he did not have sex with the girl and that he thought she was eighteen years old, fell on deaf ears. The Police had two star witnesses, the girl who was also brought to the watchouse, and the owner of the Pensione.

"You’ll be in the newspapers tomorrow", they said, including in your home country.

The maximum for this offence was at that time , forty years imprisonment. (Nowadays its 'life' or execution , not sure which , either is better to avoid)

Hearing that Danny soon sobred up and tried to get his wits about him.

The cops then said, "however there is a way out, if you make a donation to the poor people of the Philippines".

Of course the ‘poor people’ are the police themselves.

"How Much" enquired Danny. "100,000 Pesos". That’s more than I brought with me for my holiday, said Dennis. Not true of course, but the negotiations had just begun.

The cops went away and came back with the typed out charges. "Now if we get the OIC Police to sign this charge, there is no way back, you’ll be in court tomorrow morning and facing a forty year prison term".

They went away and returned some time later and said, "are you willing to make a donation to the poor people of the Philippines " ?

Would P50,000 do ? enquired Danny.

The cops immediately snapped back : "whattya got, travellers cheques or cash " .

Travellers Cheques replied Danny , and off they went in the Police car to the nearby Money Changer.

The Police waited outside on the footpath , Danny went in, changed his TC’s and returned placing the fifty grand in their hands. They counted the dough on the footpath in full view of pedestrians passing by. Satisfied they’d got fifty, they slapped Danny on the back and invited him to join them for drinks. (Shades of Copacabana and the two moles who robbed Peter.......another story) Danny declined, and walked off wondering what had hit him.

Naturally , he checked out of his accommodation and flew to Cebu City the next day. Further away from those cops the better.

It seems the girl and owner of the Pensione were working in cahoots with the Police. It might not have been the first time that young girl had caught a big fish like Danny. The young girl most probably gets peanuts, say P5,000 and the Pensione owner , say P5, 000 and the rest to the four policemen ('poor people') .

What happens when you don’t have the bribe money ? You rot in hell.

Keep away from young girls, even if they look 18/19 years old, don’t even talk to them.

For sure do not divulge the name of your Hotel.

I heard of a guy who had a visit from the Police on a Rape charge.

Danny soldiered on in the Philippines, married , raised a family there , then finally migrated back to England , family in tow.

He went awfully close to spending a life time in prison.
