During a six months stay in the Philippines (1970’s) and whilst staying at Alhambra Apartments , Ermita , I spied a very pretty young lady hanging around her mother, who was selling cigarettes on the footpath outside a Go-Go Bar.

Early in the night , before the customers came, this young lady would enter the go-go and stand up on the stage and gyrate to the music, flirting with the idea of working there, no doubt.

I got to talking to mumma, and enlisted her as my laundry woman. Mumma knew I was interested in her daughter, so she sent her to my apartment to deliver the laundry.

The inevitable happened, I would short time her daughter Selina ,when she called with the laundry, giving Selina a P20 tip , ostensibly for bringing the laundry, but in reality for the delicious poke that her young body delivered me.

Yes Pesos 20 was the going rate for Short Time in those days, about U$2.

In retrospect , I’m a bit disappointed with myself for not holding on to Selina longer, cause I doubt if I’ve ever found another Filipina since with such a great body, face and smile. Sometimes you don’t know when your dipping into a pot of gold.

Mumma introduced me to a Filipino who could supply cigarettes at the right price. So I bought in bulk from him and became mumma’s wholesaler , then I got the guy named Regiona ,to make a whole bunch of cigarette street vendor trays, with straps to go around the neck.

Then Regiona recruited sixteen young kids and we held a ’board of directors’ meeting at the one star Luneta Park Hotel ,where I shouted them all a meal and encouraged them to go out and sell like hell.

Regiona would set them about their business, dropping them off and picking them up at various spots in Quezon City.

Selina’s performance in bed improved around this time. Mumma must have told her that I was a budding business tycoon or something. For sure mumma relied on me for cheap priced cigarettes and Selina was always impressed with the many cartons of cig’s stacked in my room. Mumma could only buy 3/5 cartons,at a time when I had hundreds in my room. To Selina , a sign of wealth I suppose.

However, in reality the business was going bad. I had to keep investing fresh capital to buy cigarettes, cause the kids didn’t balance or they ran off with the trays, cig’s cash and all.

In addition ,I found out the hard way that the Police control cigarette street vending and most other street sales , so it wasn’t prudent for me, a foreigner on a tourist visa ,to be competing with them.

Regiona told me that some of the kids told the cops an Americano was behind the operation.

Being non profitable and not sure who was ripping me off, the kids or Regiona and always the threat of Police action , I decided to close down this little exercise and only supply Selina’s Mother with cigarettes until I had no more.

When that happened I hopped on a boat to Cebu City, as a fellow tenant in Alhambra (Tigerman) told me it was superior to Ermita, and so it was.

Don’t know what happened to Mumma and Selina.

Called back a year later to dip into that 'golden pot' again , but mumma wasn’t there anymore.

A year is a long time in the Philippines : )

Lot's can happen in a tipsy turvy country like the Philippines.

In almost 30 years, I have seen a lot of changes. But one thing remains constant - those Philippine Mums keep churning out those Little Brown Bombers by the millions , God bless their souls !
