GUIDE only :

Use the information below as a broad guide only.

It will be helpful in getting you started. Initially I collected all the information personally , but not any more.

When I travel overseas nowadays , I only update towns and places that I am personally interested in.

"Reviewed" (below) means I have checked other sources and adjusted info accordingly.

--

Another way of updating info is via YOUR 'Field Reports" , sent in on return from trips overseas.

Fellow Mongers will appreciate any info you can supply.

--

Overall , you should not rely on any one website for accurate/up to date info. Scour the Internet and draw your own conclusions : )

UPDATES : Reviewed May 2008

Check "Field Reports - Thailand" for the possibility of fresher info/updates (doubtful .... so far , very few people are contributing to Thailand Field Reports).

--------------------------------------

PICS : In the NEW page/link (on Main Index page) you will find "Fishin for Fun" and "Escape" series of Diaries. On those particular pages you will find hundreds of pics of Thailand/Philippines , and usually a minimum of ten pics of girls I have met , on each of those pages. No pics on these Facts pages. Facts man , facts , no pics here. "Without the facts where are the fucks" ? : )

Sweet Chiang Mai

But not as sweet as it used to be, especially with the increasing traffic and pollution , but sweet nevertheless. It has a certain, charm/character that most other towns/cities do not have . This of course, is my personal opinion. I have a prejudice towards small/medium sized cities and Chiang Mai fits that bill. "Big enough to be sinful, small enough to be provincial" is what I say about Chiang Mai and its sister city Cebu in the Philippines. Like Cebu , it has the reputation of being the place where the beauty queens come from , and I'm not talking about katoey's : )

It's the 'beauty queen' reputation that first attracted me to Chiang Mai in the 1970's , and on arrival I found the town itself also had a quaint charm about it that I liked and still like. That of course is changing as it grows into an ever bigger and busier city. As a sex city, it can be beaten quite easily by Pattaya and Bangkok and to a lesser extent by Patong (Phuket).

Also, in Chiang Mai you can run into ladies who have little experience of farangs ways and thus come across as shy, timid or even unco-operative. Better looking, but not better performing is what some would say about them. They perform better if you can speak some of the language. This 'coldness' by the girls , mainly occurs in Thai orientated places.

So , on with the show and let's explore this virtual treasure chest of light skinned , pretty , but not so sexy (?) Chiang Mai ladies.

--------------------------------------------

Quick tips for Chiang Mai: For Budget Bangers with no time to waste - stay at Roon Ruang , eat at True Blue , Beer Bar crawl in Loi Kroh Road , Go-Go at Foxy Lady and Massage at Sayuri. Details re these can be found in this Basics section and the Chiangmai Nightlife section/link.

MAP No.1 : Basic Familiarisation (Chiang Mai) :

No.1 = The old city , surrounded by a moat , extending some distance to the West.

No.2 = The moat (water canal) which completely surrounds the old city area. Represented by - - - markings.

No.3 = The Thapae Gate and traditional entrance to the old city. It is built over the moat.

No.4 = Arrow leading to the start of Moon Muang Rd , running South-North (vertically on screen). The main whorist/tourist drag. Go-Go , Beer Bars , Restaurants.

No.5 = Arrow leading to Kotchasan Rd , running South-North (vertically on screen) , on the opposite side of the moat to Moon Muang. The second most important whorist strip (Spotlight Go-Go & Loi Kroh Beer Bars).

No.6 = The New City , beyond the moat , surrounds the old city Nth West South East. It is much larger than the old city , and offers mostly Massage , Disco and the obligatory Night Bazaar (tourist activity).

No.7 = The Airport which is some kilometres South-West from the Moat.

Map No.2 below offers more info on Chiang Mai. The above is just general familiarisation for you.

See MAPS info below , and use B&B Map in conjunction with ours.

TRANSPORT: In my opinion you only have two choices in getting to Chiangmai , although in the years gone by , I travelled on more than one occasion via the third choice (bus).

Going by Bus nowadays is not really an alternative at all. Dangerous (lots of road accidents) boring , and a real 'marathon effort' at about 600baht and 11hours. I gave up going by bus when, over the years, I realised how many fatal road accidents the Thais have , and the futility of trying to save 1000Baht on an air fare (now 1600 Baht saving , but I still wouldnt go by bus).

Spend a bit on yourself , there is no countryside to see on the bus , thus no 'gain' , and only 'pain'.

Fly up , train back with a Chiangmai beauty , is not a bad idea. Show her off , in front of all those dark skinned Isaan girls that inhabit Bangkok's go-go bars : )

TO CHIANG MAI :

By Air - Currently best bet is an airline called : "1 , 2 , Go" (Orient Thai). Budget airline. About Bt1700 one way. Thai Air quoted me Bt2800 one way same time. Air Asia (www.airasia.com) does not have the same respect of 1 , 2 Go. In fact I had an unsatisfactory experience with Air Asia on last trip. Anyway Thai Air is too expensive nowadays.

Departure Bangkok - If you do not have a ticket ask at one of the many Airport Information Desks where you can buy your ticket.

Getting from Intl to Domestic : If you arrive from overseas at the Bangkok Intl Airport and enter the Arrivals Hall you turn to your left and exit the last glass door on your right just before the Airport Post Office. The "Shuttle Bus.15" is just outside these doors at pickup point number .15 . , every 10 minutes or so. Note : Previous instructions depends on what Terminal you arrived at. Ask at 'Airport Info' desk if any queries.

When you exit the Shuttle Bus and enter the Domestic Airport you'll find Departures upstairs.

Alternatively , you can arrive at Bangkok Domestic Airport Departures by taxi - simple and straight forward , or by train from Hualamphong Station , a 52 minute journey costing you the princely sum of Baht 5 and walk across from the Don Muang train station to the International Terminal where you catch the free Shuttle Bus (described above) to the Domestic Airport.

Arrival at Chiang Mai by Air -

Airport : All Airport info might be a little dated by now. I normally fly to Chiangrai and bus back to Chiangmai , so not sure what the arragement is at Chiangmai Airport nowadays.

In days of yore ... Exit plane, walk along tarmac and follow the leader to Domestic Arrivals and ‘Baggage Collect’ . Small conveyor belt, grab bag , out Exit door. To your left as you exit Baggage Hall is the "Airport Taxi" desk. Get your Bt120 limo ticket here. You pay driver the Bt120 plus tip if any (Bt20/50) at the end of your trip.

Other facilities at this airport :

Hotels Association Desk. They show you a Photo Album of association members hotels. Pretty limited. I suspect the staff at this booth are getting a commission from the Hotel they send you to, so they will send you to the one with the best commission , if they can. Better to check my reco's below or have a look at a copy of Lonely Planet. Only prob with Lonely Planet , the places they reco. are Backpacker friendly but not necessarily Overnight Guest (Lady) friendly.

There is also an "Airport Info." Desk which should not be confused with Tourist Info Desk . No Tourist Info Desk at the Airport. Don't worry, whorist .com has plans of installing a "Whorist Information" Desk in the future : )

ATM’s , covering most brands , are a fair walk (with baggage). Even further yet again and about 75 metres from Baggage Exit are three Foreign Exchange Offices. That is, at the very end of the building. More convenient to change at Bangkok before departure.

Transport to city area - Most convenient - "Airport Taxi". Get ticket at Booth (Baht120) , located to left as you exit Baggage Hall and then exit glass doors which are also to the left of the Baggage exit/Booth (Booth staff will direct you) and wave ticket. Limo representative will approach you and allocate a driver to you. Driver takes ticket and delivers you to the address on the ticket. You pay the driver at the end of your trip. Usually no hassles with these drivers.

An alternative to the Limo. would be to try your luck and stand at the steps outside the Domestic/Int’l Departures entrance steps (to your right as you exit the Baggage Hall) and grab a Tuk Tuk dropping someone off. Baht 50 is the correct Tuk Tuk fare to Chiangmai City. Next alternative, and requiring a little more energy and patience , is to exit the same doors for the Limo, pass the Limo people, walk 150 (?) metres past the car park in the hot sun , onto the main road outside the Airport and wave down a passing Tuk Tuk. Once again Baht 50. Tuk Tuk drivers are reasonably good at English but if your accommodation is not well known by the drivers, they might have difficulty in locating it.

"Airport Taxi" is the best for a smooth transition from the Airport to your lodgings as the English speaking lady at the booth will explain to the driver where your Hotel is , if necessary.

By Train from Bgk -

Suggest you go to Hua Lamphong train station in a taxi and buy ticket day before. See "Best buy" , below.

If you want to buy from travel agent : 1. Check your Hotel , maybe they can sell you a ticket , or 2. Thai Overland Travel (TOT) , who are located at 407 Sukhumvit Road, between Soi 21 & 23 and therefore a long walk from the Soi.4 area. Alternatively, catch the Skytrain to AsokE4 Station (Soi 21). Phone (02) 2584778-80. 2589246-7 Fax (02) 259-6558. Email : todbul@a-net.net.th or todbul@ksc.th.com Alternatively go to Hua Lamphong train station day or two beforehand and buy direct there.

As you enter the front door of TOT - Straight ahead = Overseas Air ; to your right - Domestic Air . Upstairs - Train Tickets. No train ticket sales during lunch hour. Call personally around 9a - 11a or 2p -5pm. Chiang Mai is a popular route, buy your ticket a day or two before departure.

Best buy: 2nd class special express sleeper , air con car . Choice of floor level or upper berth. I prefer the upper sleeping berth away from potential dust and more secure for your small personal belongings when asleep. Cost Baht960 approx total (standard ticket + special xprs fee + sleeping berth charge + air con fee) ex travel agent Bangkok. Might be cheaper if bought at Hua Lamphong train station itself . Fan sleeper is Bt800 all up ex travel agent , and a bit hot. Air con is too cold. Take your choice. I've tried both and prefer air con , cause with fan you arrive feeling very dirty having slept hot in ya clothes overnight.

If on time , it takes approx 14 hours. I think its been a lot quicker than that on occasions too , dont know why. You can bet on it leaving on time, but not necessarily arriving on time. This applies to all train travel in Thailand.

Arrival at Chiang Mai Train Station - Catch a Tuk Tuk out the front of the station , to accommodation in the Thapae Gate area for Baht 60.

By Bus from Bangkok - As in the introductory notes , busing it from Bangkok is not recommended . Uncomfortable and unsafe with erratic drivers on a congested road. Food enroute is also unsatisfactory. For a land trip , take the train , it's a little bit of old world charm and a lot safer and convenient.

.

-----------------------------------------------

TO BANGKOK (from Chiang Mai) :

By Train -

As this is a popular route, purchase your ticket at the Chiang Mai Train Station (No.34 on the Map No.2 below) at least the day before departure. Tuk Tuk to the Station Baht 60 from the Thapae Gate area. See Bangkok to Chiang Mai Train info for more details (Bangkok notes). Much the same in reverse. Takes 14hrs to get to Bangkok. See prices Bgk - Mai , same in reverse.

If your heading for the Bangkok International Airport ask the steward, later on in the trip, anticipated arrival time at the Don Muang Airport Station. I think on my last trip the train was running one and a quarter hours late. Make allowances for delays like this, if your catching an international flight. From the station you cross an over pass to the Airport itself.

All of this info belongs to : www.whorist.com

By Plane -

See Arrival Airport notes above. You can buy "1 , 2 Go" air ticket over the phone with credit card. Phone number 1126. I went out to airport and bought ticket there , 5hrs before flying time. Alternatively , check Air Asia , or Thai Airways Office , located at 240 Phra Pokklao Road Chiang Mai (See No. 37 on Map below). Quickest way to the Airport is Tuk Tuk @ Baht 50/70. Songthaew communal taxi not so quick and Baht 20. Prices are being effected by oil price hikes.

-----------------------------------------------

TRANSPORT WITHIN CHIANG MAI :

You have four choices :

1. Tuk tuks - Ave fare 30 baht, 40/50 for longer trips. Most popular form of transport.

2. Samlors (push bike taxis) still operate , same cost as Tuk Tuk . 'Old World Charm' : )

3. Songthaew (public pick up’s with bench seats ) , average fare , 10baht. Enquire with the driver first before embarking. He might not be going anywhere near your drop off point and his English might be limited.

4. Honda Dream 100cc motorbikes Hire ....... Baht 150 or more per day . Check and make sure Insurance is included. One you might like to try : Mr Mechanic Soi .5. Moonmuang Rd , see No.4 on Map No.2 below . Phone : 053-214708. No Fax/Email. 150/200 Metres down from JJ Bakery , see No.5 on Map No.2 below (for JJ).

Choose a helmet with visor (pollution/dust etc). Check brakes , tyres , lights , horn etc BEFORE you sign hire contract.

Hotel Info re SEX with HOOKERS - CHIANG MAI Thailand :

ACCOMMODATION

I have been to Chiang Mai umpteen times and up to about 5 years ago experimented with accom , but not any more. Roon Ruang Hotel is my favourite abode in Chiangmai nowadays. For budget bangers only , big spender seek elsewhere. Ratings on lodgings are very subjective. What suits one, does not necessarily suit another.

But the good news is - there is one heap of accommodation in Chiang Mai. No shortage in that respect. Most of it is budget priced, reasonable and 'lady friendly', but of course check that aspect before putting any money on the table. After dropping your bags at one, you can stroll around town where you will bump into one lodging house after another. As usual, follow the basic 'rules of encounter' as espoused in the Bangkok Accom Section.

Overall : Double Room means accommodation for two people, so if you have an o/n guest you do not have to pay extra.

Budget Accommodation -

The currency quoted on this website is the Thai Baht. For conversion to your local currency refer to : www.xe.net/ucc

In order of merit (personal subjective opinion only , of course).

Right now , today , I would only choose from the first two , no other choices for me :

No.21 on Map No.2 below : Roon Ruang Hotel - 398 Tapae Rd. Phone (053) 234746/232017. Fax (053) 2522409. No email. Double Air Con Rooms with genuine Hot Water service Baht 450 (approx) ; Same but fan only Baht 400 (approx) upstairs (nice simple balcony) , Bt350 if downstairs . Two/three mins from Thapae Gate and action area, but it is difficult walking across Chai Ya Phum Rd , to Moon Muang Road and the action during peak hour traffic. Heavy vehicular traffic being the problem. There was a young guy in his mid twenties staying at Roon Ruang who said he had been staying there two weeks and in that time had been unable to cross Chai Ya Phum Road ! Incredible, it wasn't that difficult to cross.

Good Management and ambience (some trees, shrubbery) - Roon Ruang. ‘Ladies’, no prob and no extra charge. Before checking in to Roon Ruang I asked the young lad at the Counter : "Any problems with Ladies" ?. He replied with a nice smile :"No problem for us , maybe problem for you" . That is , we accept no responsibility re thefts in the room etc. Upstairs rooms have a balcony and share Fridges. Sec. Boxes - yes. Negatives - floor coverings could be better. Walls need a fresh coat of paint. Cable TV - limited Channels, incl. no Sports Channel. Channel 54 best for news/sports coverage (BBC).

No.5 on Map No.2 below : Montri Hotel - Location : 2-6 Ratchadamnoen Rd (opp. Thapae Gate). Main entrance to Hotel is in Moon Muang Road.

Phone (66-53) 211069-70 Fax 217416 Email: am-intl@cm.ksc.co.th . Baht 575/625 standard room , Bt695/745 ‘Superior’. Ask for back room away from Moon Muang Road.(noise factor). Sec box. Sat. TV. Fridge. Air. No prob o/n (on night strip) , but check before booking in. It’s a good quality hotel on the main night life/restaurant road. Exc. location. Recommended.

All of this info belongs to : www.whorist.com

---------

No.35 on Map No.2 below : Tapae Place Hotel - Soi .3. Thapae Road, No.2. Phone (053) 270159. Fax nil. Email: tapaehotel@hotmail.com . (Along Thapae Rd , the Sois are numbered from East to West). Thapae/Tapae ..... same road/place.

Finding it : From Roon Ruang (No.21 above), walk 3/400 mtrs down Tapae Road to Soi .3. on your right. The hotel is only a few metres up Soi.3. Double Air Con Room , Baht 600/700. No fan rooms . Sec box - yes. Cable TV - Receptionist said - ‘soon’. Overnight guests ok, but check before booking in and no extra charge for same , cause double room paid for. Good ambience, standard , and location . Only possible negative factor is the entrance and lobby which is long and wide. Therefore the 'walk of shame' might be a factor for some : )

----------

Lai Thai Guesthouse - 111/4-5 Kotchasarn Road Tel: (053) 271725, 271414 or 271534 Fax: (053) 272724 . Not shown on the map.

Modern Thai-style 120 room hotel located on the southeast corner of the moat. It's still close to the action and merely 5 minutes from the Loi Kroh Road and Thapae Gate. Small courtyard with swimming pool, air-con rooms available for 590 baht. Guest friendly. A possibility. Not shown on map.

No.24 on Map No.2 below : Little Home Guest House - 1/1 Kotchasarn Soi.3. ( No.120). Chiangmai. Ph. (66.53.) 206939 Fax 273662 .

Upstairs rooms have balconies. Baht 250 Single/Double (downstairs, not sure about upstairs). There is a little outdoors breakfast restaurant on the same premises whereby backpackers and the like sit and watch who comes and goes. Walk of shame factor : ) . I moved out of here cause I am old , and feel a bit uncomfortable with young foreigners observing me bringing girls half my age , into the place : )

----------

Other possibilities - Veerachai Court, Thapae Road Soi.2. Baht 380 ; Prince Hotel , 3 Taiwang Road Baht 600; Peters House , 2/10 Kotchasarn Road , near corner of Thapae Road Baht 300 ; President Hotel , 226 Witchayanon Road , Baht 350. Not shown on map. And the list goes on. No shortage of options in Chiangmai.

Online prices etc : www.ethaihotel.com

MAPS : We suggest you buy the The "B&B Thailand North" Map and mark on that map , the spots outlined on our makeshift map below. That same B&B map supplies an adequate map of Chiang Rai too. You can buy maps (and Thai Dictionaries) at DK Bookshop which is located in Kotchasan Road , about 70 metres up from the corner of Kotchasan and Loi Kroh Roads , near No.22 on our map below. Kotchasan Rd is on the opposite side of the Moat to Johns Bar. DK Bookstore is a large white building set about 50 metres back from the road. Ask anyone you come across , everyone knows the DK Book Store.

We have produced a very simple map below , to give you some idea of where everything is. Use it in conjunction with the B&B Map.

MAP No.2 : Chiang Mai. Accommodation , Restaurants & Focal points:

1 = This represents the Airport which is some kilometres away in a South Westerly direction

2 = All this area is the old city , behind the moat. The new city begins East of No.8 (Thapae Gate). To the right.

3 = This is the moat. The water of the moat is represented with " - - - " markings. The moat is is a rectangular shape , encircling the entire old city. It extends some distance to the left (West) of the screen. Anything outside the moat is considered 'new city'.

4 = Mr Mechanic , motor bike hire shop (Honda Dreams100).

5 = Montri Hotel & JJ Bakery (Restaurant).

8 = The Thapae Gate , situated over the top of the moat. This gate was the main entrance to the old city , in days of yore.

9 = True Blue Restaurant

11 = Bier Stube Restaurant

16 = Moon Muang Road. The number sixteen is straddling Moon Muang Rd , running South to North , vertically on the screen. This is THE nightlife street of Chiangmai (which is still not saying much : ).

22 = Kotchasan Road. The road on the other side of the moat , running South to North/vertically.

24 = Little Home Guest House (maybe name change nowadays ?)

26 = Loi Kroh Road. One way traffic West to East.

28 = Night Bazaar.

36 = The beginnings of the new city , a very large area , much bigger than the old city.

35 = Thapae Place Hotel.

21 = Roon Ruang Hotel

20 = Thapae Road . One way traffic East to West.

30 = Nawarat Bridge across the Mae Nam Ping River.

31 = Charoen Muang Road which leads to Sayuri and Pandora Massage Parlours. Two way traffic.

34 = Train Station. Trains to and from Bangkok.

37 = Thai Airways Office. Phrapokklao Road.

Restaurant info re SEX with HOOKERS - CHIANG MAI Thailand :

RESTAURANTS

Chiang Mai Restaurants are as good or better than the renowned Bangkok ones. All , except the first listed, are along the tourist strip and action area and therefore are convenient to Roon Ruang and Montri Hotels.

Phonnon Cafe - Tapae Road, opp. entr. to Roon Ruang Hotel. On the corner of Soi.6. Popular with younger set, especially at breakfast time. Attractive waitresses.

No.11 on Map No.2 above : Bier Stube - 33/6 Moon Muang, just past Johns Corner (see Nightlife Notes for location of Johns) and 50/60 mtrs before True Blue Restaurant. Food is good but the Menu is a bit limited in respect of Anglo Saxon type meals. Beer cheaper than True Blue. You can sit out the front of Stube , sip a beer, and maybe catch a fish as it struts along the tourist drag (Moon Muang Road) , but its a long shot : ) UPDATE : Forget this place , hasnt kept abreast of the times. Try True Blue (below) instead.

No. 9 on Map No.2 above : True Blue - 47 Moon Muang, 50/60 metres further on (heading north) ,same side. Big breakfasts , good food and service. Cable TV with News/Sports. Sports bar at back. Beer not that cheap. Overall - top place for a big feed at a reasonable price. PS : You can also sit out at the front and maybe hook a passing 'fish' (gal) : )

All of this info belongs to : www.whorist.com

No.5 on Map No.2 above : JJ Bakery (and the Montri Hotel) - c/r Moon Muang & Ratchamnoen Rds, about another 100 metres down on same side. Big variety of food, but the place has no soul/character. Popular, but I have never eaten there.

Kafe - 127 Moon Muang, on c/r of Soi .5. , about 150/200 metres further down from JJ. We are now getting away from the action area. Long established and reas. popular Restaurant. Never tried it. Thai, Chinese and Euro food.

No.28 on Map No.2 above : Nighmarket/NightBazaar - There are some good cheap Restaurants located at the night market, and just about everywhere else in Chiangmai : )

So you are now familiar with some accommodation and restaurant choices.

See "Chiang Mai Nightlife" link below for some info on Chiang Mai's sex scene.
